Overview

The responsibility for emergency preparedness, facility resilience and business continuity is central to the role of facility managers, who have the primary concern for the health and safety of the built environment and who serve as stewards of the built environment.

They must lead the facility organization by providing guidance to staff and service providers, and they must influence the decisions and attitudes of the demand organization’s leaders as well as that of occupants, government officials, suppliers, community leaders & business partners.

Course Objectives:

The IFMA Risk Management & Business Continuity training is designed to equip facility managers with the skills to support organizational resilience by identifying vulnerabilities, assessing risks, and developing emergency and continuity plans. 

Training Objectives

On completion of the course, participants will be able to: 

  • Evaluate facility risks that could disrupt or compromise the organization's functions and provide valuable input into broader risk management strategies.

  • Support the organization's need for developing, testing, and maintaining a comprehensive business continuity plan.

  • Develop a risk management plan specifically for facility management (FM) operations that aligns with the organization's overall strategic goals.

  • Train FM staff on their specific roles and responsibilities in the event of a business interruption.

  • Detail and plan for the provision of necessary resources to support the facilities aspect of business continuity during an emergency.

  • Identify human and physical assets at risk, assess their vulnerability, and prioritize the severity of potential occurrences.

  • Prepare a plan to mitigate as much risk as possible, leveraging various strategies like reduction, transfer, or avoidance

  • Introduction to Risk Management: Understanding what risk is, its sources, and the role of facility managers.

  • Risk Identification and Assessment:

    • Identifying potential internal and external threats (e.g., natural disasters, man-made hazards, technological threats).

    • Assessing the impact and likelihood of risks on operations, reputation, and resources.

    • Prioritizing risks for treatment and follow-up.

  • Risk Treatment and Response Planning:

    • Methods to reduce, transfer, or avoid risk exposure.

    • Developing effective, structured response actions and coordinating responsibilities across teams.

  • Emergency Preparedness:

    • Key concepts, terms, and the phases of emergency management.

    • Organizing resources and developing components of an emergency response plan, including planning in leased facilities.

  • Business Continuity Management Principles:

    • Foundations of business continuity and identifying critical activities that must remain functional during disruption.

    • Establishing resource requirements, backup solutions, and communication strategies.

    • Assisting in the design and execution of simulations and exercises to test plans.

  • Governance and Sustainability:

    • Building and governing a risk management system and developing a risk acceptance culture.

    • Ensuring the program evolves with changing business needs and embedding resilience into the organizational culture.
